Medical Massage

Medical Massage is medically necessary massage therapy prescribed by a Doctors, Chiropractor or Physiotherapist and provided to the patient. Medical massage has a specific treatment plan that is outcome based, with a specific goal for improvement, in a specific time frame.

I will work with your referring medical professional and also can utilising their diagnosis and treatment plan, to assist you in achieving maximum medical improvement for your specific soft tissue injury.

There are various reasons why a person seeks Medical Massage. A specific event such as an injury from an automobile accident or a work related accident, physical trauma due to sporting activity, repetitive stress injuries, postural distortions that has become traumatic to your body or chronic pain that remains long after an injury or surgery has healed.

Working to realign soft tissue and improve range of motion is a primary goal of any rehabilitation program. Medical Massage can help you achieve these goals.

While Massage Therapy is not intended to replace appropriate medical care, there are a number of conditions in which Medical Massage is helpful as a form of treatment.

Condition such as:

  • Headaches

  • Temporomandibular sprain/strain

  • Cervical Pain

  • Whiplash (Cervical Sprain/Strain)

  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

  • Upper, Mid and Low Back Pain

  • Shoulder, Arm, Elbow, Wrist and Hand Pain

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Pelvic Pain

  • Sciatica

  • Leg, Knee, Ankle and Foot Pain

  • Postural Distortions

  • Chronic Pain

  • Sprains and Strains

  • Tendonitis

  • Neuritis (Nerve Inflammation)

  • Neuralgia (Nerve Pain)

  • Radiculitis (Radiating Pain)

Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic massage is a therapeutic approach that utilizes many different types of massage to assist the client / patient in achieving structural balance and thus pain relief.

Orthopedic massage is a manual approach to the treatment of numerous pain and injury conditions previously treated only with conventional, medical methods. Orthopedic massage is a comprehensive system of treatment that incorporates a wide variety of massage treatment techniques

While it is not appropriate for a massage therapist to specifically diagnose an injury, I will work closely with your other health professionals such as Orthopedic Physicians, MD’s, Chiropractors, and Physical Therapists.

Whether you are suffering from whiplash, a sprained ankle, tennis or golfers elbow, impingement syndromes or any type of tendonitis, orthopedic massage is often a holistic alternative to pills, injections or surgery.

Orthopedic techniques are particularly effective at breaking down excessive lesions or adhesions. Reduction in these adhesions aids in broadening the injured tissues, this is important for normal, pain free movement. Orthopedic techniques also increase the local blood supply to injured tissue, which reduces pain. More gentle work, applied in the early inflammatory phases of an injury increases circulation and the rate of healing.

It is now generally recognized that manual orthopedic techniques applied to immature and weak scar tissue helps remodel the tissue into linearly arranged bundles of connective tissue.

Orthopedic Massage works well for:

  • Professional athletes

  • Individuals with chronic pain

  • Weekend warriors

  • Repetitive use and stress injuries

  • Individuals recovering from trauma

Do pain or restricted movement keep you from enjoying the quality of life you deserve?

  • Because the muscle is not receiving enough blood, the muscle is also not receiving enough oxygen

  • The lack of oxygen causes the muscle to produce lactic acid

  • The lactic acid makes the muscle feel sore following physical activity.

Neuromuscular Therapy

What Is Neuromuscular Therapy? Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a very specialised form of manual therapy.  Our therapist trained in NMT is educated in the physiology of the nervous system and its effect on the muscular and skeletal systems. The Neuromuscular Therapist also is educated in kinesiology and biomechanics and how to work in a clinical or medical environment.

By definition, Neuromuscular Therapy is the utilization of static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (which are responsible for every movement, function and thought) to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. It is therefore necessary to stabilize low levels of neurological activity to maintain normal function and overall health.

Neuromuscular Therapy will be used to address five elements that cause pain:

  1. Ischemia: Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch

  2. Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body

  3. Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone

  4. Postural Distortion: Imbalance of the muscular system resulting from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes

  5. Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing of tennis stroke, computer keyboarding)

Because the muscle is not receiving enough blood, the muscle is also not receiving enough oxygen

  • The lack of oxygen causes the muscle to produce lactic acid

  • The lactic acid makes the muscle feel sore following physical activity.
